Do you miss going to the movies? Do you miss the carnivals? Do you miss that delicious, soft, sweet or salty pretzel? With this recipe, you can relive those days at home! Once you taste this pretzel, you will never want to buy store bought pretzels again! By the way my 14 year old son bakes them and they comes out so delicious every single time, I can't stop eating them!
Ingredients
- 4 cups of all-purpose flour (Along with a little more for work surface)
- 1 and 1/2 of a cup of warm water (Not hot)
- 1 packet (2 and 1/4 tsp.) of yeast (Active dry or instant)
- 1 tbsp. of unsalted butter, melted and cooled
- 1 tbsp. of granulated or brown sugar
- 1 tsp. of salt
Baking soda solution (Optional, but recommended)
- 9 cups of water
- 1/2 cup of baking soda
For sweet pretzels
- 2 tbsp. of melted butter
- 1/2 a cup of granulated sugar
- 1 and 1/2 tbsp. of ground cinnamon
For salty pretzels
- Coarse sea salt for sprinkling
Instructions
Pour the water into a large mixing bowl. Add the yeast and whisk lightly. Let it sit for 1 minute.
Add the melted butter, sugar, and salt to the yeast mixture. Whisk it together, then one cup at a time, add the flour and mix it together with a spatula. Cover it with a towel and let it rise for 20 minutes.
Place the dough on a floured surface and separate it into 12 1/3 cup portions. Roll out the dough into a 20-22 inch rope. Form a U shape and twist the ends of the rope over each other. Then pull it back towards you until you end up with something that looks like a pretzel.
Preheat oven to 400 degrees Fahrenheit. Line a large baking sheet with parchment paper and set aside.
(This step will lead to a more colorful and tasty pretzel, but if you want to skip this step, you may apply an egg wash instead) Bring water to a boil, then add the baking soda to it. Add one pretzel at a time and leave it in the boiling water for 10-15 seconds on each side. Leave it in for too long and your pretzels will have a metallic taste. Add the boiled pretzels on the baking sheet, and if you want a salty pretzel, now you must add the coarse salt. Leave the pretzels plain if you want sweet pretzels.
Bake for 12-15 minutes. If you made salty pretzels, you're now done! You may have it with your dipping sauce of choice(Mustard is my favorite!)
For sweet pretzels, apply some melted butter on the pretzels. Mix sugar and cinnamon in a wide bowl. Dip the pretzels into the sugar mixture and let it sit for 2 minutes to cool. Now, all that's left is to enjoy them with some friends! (Or don't...)
